IED Treatment

Learn more about IED treatment at Millcreek of Pontotoc

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is a type of impulse control disorder that elicits a number of negative behaviors due to an inability to control one’s impulses. Children and adolescents with IED will often engage in repeated episodes of impulsive, aggressive, violent, and angry behaviors and verbal outbursts that are grossly out of proportion to the given situation. These impulsive outbursts are done so despite the lack of provocation and without consideration or regard for the potential negative outcomes that may result. Such outbursts can cause harm to the child, themselves, or to those around them. When children and adolescents have IED, they typically feel a sense of remorse or embarrassment once the episode has passed. While the presence of this disorder can bring about countless negative repercussions on a child or adolescent’s life, there is treatment available that can prevent further devastation.

At Millcreek of Pontotoc, an IED treatment clinic in North Mississippi, we recognize the unique, and often overwhelming, challenges that come with having a child who is suffering from intermittent explosive disorder. Remaining sensitive to the needs of this population of children, we offer specialized programming that is tailored to meet the individual needs of each child who is entrusted into our care. Situated on 18 beautifully shaded acres of serene landscape, our 51-bed psychiatric residential treatment center provides caring and compassionate treatment for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 20 who are struggling with an array of mental, emotional, and/or behavioral concerns, including IED. Helping a Loved One Get Treatment for IED

Helping your child or teen get treatment

If your child is struggling with the symptoms of intermittent explosive disorder, you are likely feeling an array of emotions. Beyond being frustrated with the way in which your child or teen behaves, you may also feel a sense of fear and apprehension regarding what they will do next. The impulsivity of their behaviors can leave you questioning how your child will react to any given situation, causing you to feel as though you are constantly walking on eggshells. You may also be feeling extremely concerned about what your child’s future holds if they do not cease engaging in these behaviors. You might be feeling confused as to how to appropriately address your child’s behaviors, and you may also be feeling helpless as to what role you can play in putting an end to your child’s struggling. The most important thing that you can do is consult with a mental health professional regarding your concerns. However, there are additional steps you can take. Consider the following:

  • Learn about intermittent explosive disorder. The more knowledge you have on the illness itself, the greater an understanding you will have on what your child is going through.
  • Foster a comfortable environment where your child is encouraged to talk about the things that they are feeling.
  • Research various treatment options offered at IED treatment centers in order to find one that will best meet your child’s particular needs.
  • Anticipate that your child will be resistant to receiving treatment. Remain calm, yet firm, and explain the ways in which their life will improve once treatment has been received.
  • Be an active part of your child’s treatment process. Family involvement is crucial to eliciting successful treatment outcomes.
  • Remain unconditionally supportive.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for IED at Millcreek of Pontotoc in North Mississippi

When children and adolescents are suffering from intermittent explosive disorder and denied access to treatment at a clinic, the long-term effects that their behaviors can have on their futures can be monumental. Fortunately, these negative consequences can be prevented.

One of the most beneficial treatment options for children and teens with intermittent explosive disorder is treatment through a residential IED treatment clinic. Residential IED treatment centers provide children with a safe and secure environment where they are monitored by mental health professionals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With such monitoring, children or teens have access to support whenever they feel the need to give into impulses. By taking part in a clinic’s residential treatment, children and teens are also given the opportunity to step away from the stresses and potential triggers of their normal, everyday lives, and instead place all of their energy and focus on healing. Additionally, family members of children with IED can receive the education and support they need by taking an active role in their child’s treatment process. Through this type of intensive care at our IED treatment center in North Mississippi, children and teens can learn how to manage their emotions, control their impulses, and develop new coping skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.

IED Treatment Options

Types of IED treatment offered at Millcreek of Pontotoc in North Mississippi

At Millcreek of Pontotoc, an IED treatment clinic in North Misssissippi, we understand that making the decision to place your child into a residential IED treatment center can be difficult. We also understand that the process of doing so can seem intimidating, which is why we strive to make the admissions procedure at our clinic as effortless as possible. Our IED treatment center’s highly trained and qualified staff is able to conduct psycho-social assessments over the phone or in person. Once admitted for care in our residential treatment clinic, every child and teen will undergo a thorough evaluation process that includes physical, educational, psychological, and psychiatric assessments, the results of which will be added to the information provided by the initial psycho-social assessment. This thorough evaluation process allows the staff at our IED treatment center to gain a full understanding of each child’s or teen’s unique developmental, emotional, and educational needs. Taking into account all of the information received throughout the course of these evaluations, an individualized IED treatment plan is then devised for each child or teen at our treatment clinic. The various aspects of the therapeutic interventions that your child or teen will be offered as part of their IED treatment plan may include the following:

Medication management: In some instances, the implementation of psychotropic medications may be beneficial in helping to alleviate some of the distressing symptoms of IED. Such needs will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Each child or teen will meet with a psychiatrist at our IED treatment center at least once each week in order to ensure the therapeutic effectiveness of any medications that are prescribed, as well as to make any changes that may be necessary.

Individual therapy: Individual therapy sessions are held at our IED treatment center for 60 minutes at least once each week and are designed to be a time for children or teens to meet one-on-one with their therapists in order to discuss any concerns they have, to track treatment goals, and to work on personal skills-building. Additional sessions can always be added depending on a child’s needs or when specifically requested.

Group therapy: Children and adolescents in our residential IED treatment clinic participate in 60 minute group therapy sessions five times each week. The majority of the groups are based on a cognitive behavioral therapeutic approach and include discussions on topics such as goal-setting, social skills, peer pressure, aggression, following rules, and bullying. All group topics are tailored to address specific issues that pertain to the children participating in each particular group, so the topics will vary.

Family therapy: At Millcreek of Pontotoc, an IED treatment center in North Mississippi, we believe that family involvement is paramount in eliciting successful treatment outcomes. Patients and their families participate in 60 minute family therapy sessions at least twice each month. However, additional family sessions can be added at any time depending on a patient’s needs or when requested.

Clinical staffings: Each child or teen in our care is provided with two staffings during their first month at our IED treatment center, and one staffing per month for each subsequent month that they are in our care. These staffings provide patients and their parents or guardians with specified times to meet with their treatment team in order to discuss the child’s progress in all areas of treatment, including therapeutically and academically.

Experiential therapy: In order to provide a well-rounded approach to treatment, children and teens are offered additional therapeutic options as part of their IED treatment plans. These options include art therapy, play therapy, and daily recreational therapy.

Education: While participating in treatment at Millcreek of Pontotoc, located in North Mississippi, all patients will attend our fully accredited, onsite therapeutic day school. Classes are held from 8:00am-11:00am every day, at which time children or teens break for an hour of group therapy and then have lunch. After lunch, children or teens return to class from 12:30pm-2:00pm. All classes at our IED treatment clinic are taught by teachers who are certified to teach children with special needs, and classes are held in small classrooms with low student-to-teacher ratios in order to ensure that all academic needs are fully addressed.

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for IED

At Millcreek of Pontotoc, an IED treatment clinic in North Mississippi, discharge planning starts at the time of admission. Throughout the course of IED treatment, each patient’s progress is closely monitored in order to make sure that all treatment goals are successfully reached and that appropriate recommendations for aftercare can be made. All referrals for aftercare services are made based solely on each patient’s present level of functioning at the time of discharge, as well as based on their skills set and the challenges that they may still be facing. Our staff will work with each patient and their family in order to set up any aftercare appointments or services that will help the patient remain successful. Additionally, when it is appropriate, our staff can work with teens in getting them set up with part-time jobs following their discharge.

For those families who are still in need of intensive services, but whose children no longer require residential treatment, our IED treatment center refers MYPAC in order to facilitate wraparound services. MYPAC stands for Mississippi Youth Program Around the Clock and is an intensive wraparound service that provides patients and their families with home therapy services.

Some patients will benefit from transitioning from our residential treatment clinic to our therapeutic day school treatment center as part of their step-down process as they re-integrate back into their home lives. Patients taking part in this IED treatment option will receive weekly group and individual therapy sessions, along with monthly family therapy sessions and multidisciplinary treatment team meetings with their psychiatrist.

Whatever your child’s or teen’s ongoing needs may be, you should feel assured that the staff here at Millcreek of Pontotoc, a behavioral disorders treatment clinic in North Mississippi, will do everything in our power to help them continue on their path to success.
