Millcreek School offers educational programming for children ages 6-21 with special needs. With locations in Pontotoc, Batesville, Starkville, and Greenville, these four sites are licensed and accredited as special non-public schools by the Mississippi State Department of Education. Testing, Individual Education Plans, and eligibility/screening services are available through the school.

The school program stresses the importance of the individual and the belief that each student must be recognized as unique. A specific course of instruction is prescribed in a stimulating environment and designed to develop the whole child to his or her fullest potential intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. A specialized curriculum, coordinated with the Mississippi State Department of Education, is intended to prepare students for return to a community setting.

Our Teachers
Teachers are certified in special education and are continuing their education by pursuing certification and a degree in Emotional Disabilities. These teachers utilize The Mississippi Department of Education curriculum framework to conduct individualized instruction in self-contained classrooms. Teachers are an integral part of a multidisciplinary team that focuses on helping the patient improve their skills in a school setting in order to ensure academic success.

Special Education Eligibility
The majority of our patients have special education eligibility in the area of emotional disability. Each student has an individualized education plan to address their needs with consideration given to styles and rates or learning. These plans are developed in conjunction with a variety of assessment tools upon admission.

The School Day
Students receive a minimum of five and one-half hours of instruction each day. The school day includes individual and/or group therapy, programming provided through related services, and other therapeutic activities. At the secondary level, classes provide four different opportunities for students. Students may pursue Carnegie units, GED preparedness training and follow-up, an opportunity for an occupational diploma, or a certificate.

Testing
When appropriate, students participate in statewide testing at their home schools. With a minimum 1:5 student to staff ratio, classes typically have 10 students or less per classroom. Any students without special education eligibility can be evaluated for appropriate services. These assessments follow the Mississippi State Department of Education guidelines and are reviewed by a local screening committee.
